Unusual Activities along Wigtownshire's Coastline - 18th to 21st Centuries, by David Kirkwood
Published by the Stranraer Local History Trust, 72 pages. A5 size booklet, signed by the author on the title page (N6839)
From the foreword: The coastline of Wigtownshire stretches from the head of the Cree Estuary to the boundary of Ayrshire on Lochryan. Coastal navigation, both licit and illicit, is naturally governed by the physical character of the coast, which for much of its length offers a choice of rocks, broken by occasional inlets, and stretches of tidal sand, shingle or pebbles, as well as properly constructed harbours.
From time immemorial the coastline has been the scene of unusual conduct! This book charts the history of examples of these between the 18th and 21st Centuries. The first section deals with smuggling and the policing regimes in place to checkmate this, followed by a section dealing with migration from Ireland and its initial impact on Wigtownshire. The final part of the book deals with the measures in place to deal with movements of terrorists and contraband across the North Channel.
The booklet is illustrated throughout with several small black and white photographs
Condition of the booklet is generally very good. The cover has one or two very minor scuffs but is clean and bright, the staple spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Their is a small price sticker on the rear side cover
