This book is a detailed memoir by Nestor Makhno, a peasant anarcho-communist who organised the revolution in Ukraine, and it covers the period around 1917/1918, including the two revolutions of 1917 and the beginnings of the Civil War..... Nestor Makhno (1888-1934) was a Ukrainian anarcho-communist guerrilla leader turned army commander who led an independent anarchist army in Ukraine during the Russian Revolution and subsequent Civil War. A commander of the peasant Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army of Ukraine, also known as the Anarchist Black Army, Makhno led a guerrilla campaign during the Russian Civil War. He first supported the Bolsheviks, and then turned to organizing the Free Territory of Ukraine, an anarchist society, committed to resisting state authority, whether capitalist or communist. This project was cut short by the consolidation of Bolshevik power, and Makhno was forced into exile.
