Published by Sang-E-Meel (Lahore) in 1997, 285 pages. Hardback (S4534)

This book provides a fascinating and detailed history of the Punjab and its people and soldiers during the First World War, and was originally published in the Punjab in 1922 (this book is a facsimilie of the 1922 edition). At that time the Punjab was a province of British India, and as part of the empire it played it's part in the First World War....

The foreword of the book by the (then) Governor of Punjab in 1922, reads as follows: This volume which Mr Leigh has written with such loving labour speaks for itself.  It tells the story of the Punjab in the War and it tells it in a way that cannot fail to make us proud of the Province, which played so grand a part in the great struggle.  It recalls the valour and sufferings of those who fought, the munificence of those who gave, the vigour and earnestness of those who helped and organised.  Through the inspiring energy of the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir Michael O’Dwyer and his officers the Province was able to give its best and to feel that it had in no way spared itself in its great effort.  It was fitting that a record of the effort should have been put together, and the following pages will preserve for ever the memory of a time when the Province shone forth as an example of what a brave and energetic people can do in a time of national stress. Chapters include:

  • Introduction - including Administrative Divisions, The People, Local Politics, The Punjab in History, The coming of the British, The Results of British Rule

The condition of the book is generally good. The cover boards have some scuffs and blemishes, and considerable bumping along the edges and corners, but the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Their is a small bookshop stamp (from Islamabad in Pakistan!) on the first inside page, and as is usual for books published in India and Pakistan the paper used is thinner than we are used to.
