The Old Five-Sailer - A History of E Timm & Son, Flour Millers of Goole, byAlan Wilkinson
Book published by E Timms in 1996, 98 pages. Square softback - c.20.5cm by 19.5cm (S7746)
From the rear side cover: This is the story of survival. When Edward Timm started up his milling business in Goole (in 1854 according to tradition, in 1863 according to the book!) there were thousands of mills operating across Britain. Many were taken over, most were shut down, only a handful survived. Now there are three major players and no more than a couple of dozen small independents.
This book reveals how five generations of the Timm family built, expanded and safeguarded the fortunes of a small firm in a small town, how they fended off the voracious giants of the industry.
From the days when children would walk up to the mill to fill an old pillow slip with flour fot the weeks baking, through the upheaval of successive modernisations, to the days when a revolutionary new milling process was developed and refined, this illustrated history celebrates almost a century and a half of achievement.
Unfortunately since this book was published in 1996 the company has closed down, and no longer operates in Goole. The five sail windmill on Boothferry Road is now sail-less and can be found in Morrisons car park!
Condition of the book is generally a little poor. The cover has several scuffs and blemishes, and nibbling and wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact and all pages are intact and tightly bound. The book also has light spine roll along the left hand edge
