This book provides a comprehensive and detailed history of the Zulu Drifter, a type of fishing boat that was almost peculiar to the Moray Firth coastline in the North East of Scotland. The book contains many previously unseen photographs, and lists many of the registered boats of this type along with their histories...

In 1879, a local Moray fisherman from the town of Lossiemouth came up with a radical design for his new fishing boat - it had the vertical stem of the Fifie and the steeply raked stern of the Skaffie, and as the Zulu War was raging in South Africa at the time, this new class of boat became known as 'The Zulu'.

The Zulu boats were built to the carvel method of planking, and the shape of the Zulus gave the boats a long deck but a shorter keel, which greatly improved their manoeuvrability. They were two-masted boats and carried three sails - fore, mizzen and jib, and their overall design produced very fast boats that became invaluable to the herring fishing fleets of this part of Scotland. They could get to the fishing grounds quickly and returned swiftly with the catch, and it was largely because of this advantage that the Zulus rapidly became very popular along the entire east coast of Scotland. The dominance of the Zulu didn't last long however - within less than two decades Steam Drifters were replacing them.
