The McMahon Family Murders, by Joe Baker

The McMahon Family Murders, by Joe Baker, subtitled 'The facts behind the brutal murders of the McMahon family and other atrocities carried out by the Cromwell Club'

Booklet published by the Glenravel Local History Project in 2003, 78 pages. A5 size Booklet (S6405)

The McMahon murders occurred on the 24th of March 1922 in Belfast, when six Catholic men were brutally murdered by members of the Ulster Special Constabulary (USC) or Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC). The dead men were aged between 15 and 50 and all but one were members of the McMahon family, and they were all completely innocent of any crime, and had no connections to Sinn Fein, the IRA or the violent campaign then raging across Ireland.

On the night of the murders, the policemen broke into their house at night and, after seperating the men from the women and herding the men into a single room, gunned them down in cold blood. The men included a 12 year old boy, who hid behind furniture and survived, later identifying some of the policemen involved. But no one was ever brough to justice for the murders.....

This booklet, illustrated throughout with lots of photographs, maps and drawings, provides an account of the McMahon murders, as well as setting these events within the wider context of Irish history at the time, and linking the murders to the notorious 'Cromwell Club', a secretive and murderous paramilitary group within the police thought to be responsible. The booklet also includes a list of all those killed during the Belfast troubles of 1920-1922

Condition of the booklet is generally ok. The cover has several minor scuffs and creases, and some light nibbling along the edges and corners, but the staple spine is intact and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. The booklet curves gently upwards along the left hand edge, and their is a small area of creasing along the top of the front cover, which extends through to the first 30 or so inside pages
