The Loftus Mines, by Simon Chapman, subtitled 'A History of Ironstone Mining at Loftus Mines in Skinningrove Valley'
Booklet published by Industrial Archaeology of Cleveland in 1998, 76 pages. A5 size booklet (S6559)
Illustrated throughout with lots of black and white photographs, drawings and maps, this booklet provides a fascinating history of the Loftus Ironstone Mines on the rugged North Yorkshire coast, which were situated just to the east of Skinningrove in what is now Cleveland. Their history dates back to the discovery of ironstone in the area in the middle of the 19th century, a discovery that led to the rapid industrialisation of the area. Iron smelting was introduced, a jetty was built, and a considerable number of mines were opened, among them the Loftus and Whitecliffe mines, which continued in operation until they finally closed in 1958.
Condition of the booklet is generally good. The cover has some minor scuffs and blemishes, and some light nibbling and creases along the edges, but the staple spine is intact and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound
