The Castles of Western and Northern Scotland, by Mike Salter

Book published by Folly Publications in 1995, 164 pages. Paperback (N5618)

This book provides a fascinating account of the castles of Western and Northern Scotland, and is illustrated throughout with lots of small black and white photographs, as well as drawings, maps and floor plans.

From rear side cover: This book is a comprehensive guide to the history and architecture of over 240 castles, palaces, country houses and mottes dating from the 12th century to the late 17th century in what used to be the counties of Argyll, Butem Caithness, Inverness, Orkney, Ross and Cromarty, Shetland and Sutherland. Few of the buildings described are still inhabited. Several dozen have now vanished, but the majority are picturesque ruins, many of which are perched on cliffs above the sea. An introductory section is followed by six gazetteers illustrated with maps and many plans and photographs which are largely the product of the author’s own fieldwork.

Condition of the book is generally excellent. The cover is clean and tidy, the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Their is an old price printed and a small price sticker on the rear side cover
