This book provides a fascinating account of the castles of south-west Scotland, and is illustrated throughout with lots of small black and white photographs, as well as drawings, maps and floor plans.
From rear side cover: Over 280 castellated buildings erected between the early 13th and the late 17th century still stand in what used to be the counties of Ayr, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright, Lanark, Renfrew and Wigtown. The sites of another 220 such buildings are known, and there are about another 70 places still retaining earthworks remaining from the 12th century castles built of wood. Arranged in the form of an introduction followed by four gazetteers, and illustrated with numerous photographs and plans, this book gives details of the architectural features and history of these buildings. Few of the buildings described are large castles. Only about 40 still have remains of courtyards. The majority are fortified houses in a tower-like form with the main rooms stacked on above the other. Such tower houses became the normal type of dwelling for Scottish lairds from the late 14th century until the 17th century. Also described are a number of 17th century houses of a longer and lower form, but still retaining a few castellated features. This new edition also now includes a short section describing the bastle houses of the tenant farmers of Upper Clydesdale.
Condition of the book is generally excellent. The cover is clean and tidy, the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Their is an old price printed and a small price sticker on the rear side cover, and the left and right hand edges of the book curve very gently upwards (from where it has been stored flat on the shelves)
