This book provides a fascinating account of the castles in County Durham, and is illustrated throughout with lots of black and white photographs.
From the rear side cover: This book is a comprehensive guide to the history and architecture of fifty medieval castellated buildings in County Durham as it was before the 1974 boundary changes. It includes motte and bailey earthworks, stone castles, manor houses that were moated or embattled, tower houses or solar towers, and town defences. A detailed gazetteer with many plans, photographs and old prints follows an introduction explaining the development of the buildings. Finally there is a short section about a group of buildings of c1600 known as bastle houses.
The condition of the book is generally excellent. The covers are clean and bright, the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is an old price printed and a small price sticker on the rear side cover
