Book published by the Frome Society for Local Study in 2015, 134 pages. Paperback (N5829)
This book is a fascinating history of the Somerset printing firm Butler and Tanner, and is illustrated throughout with several small colour and black and white photographs and drawings.
From the preface: It is lamentable that the entire British printing trade has practically vanished over a matter of decades. The illustrious printing firm of Butler and Tanner in the town of Frome in Somerset has a long history which was, sadly, brought abruptly to a halt in 2014. The aim of this book is to document the history of the firm so as to provide an insight into: the changing technologies, the personalities of those running the firm, the challenges posed to British businesses, and the role played by a town's substantial employer in its contribution to local society. Using documentation from the Butler and Tanner archive and the testimonies of some of those associated with the firm, the purpose of this volume is to act as tribute to every single person who made a contribution to Butler and Tanner's proud history
