Booklet published by the Merton Historical Society in 2000, 59 pages. A5 size booklet (N4288P1)

This booklet offers an excellent account of the history of Mitcham's Roads and Bridges over the centuries. Mitcham is now an area of the London Borough of Merton, near to Morden and Wimbledon, and in times gone passed it was a small village in rural Surrey. The booklet is illustrated with several black and white photographs, and sections include:

  • Merton Bridge
  • Terriers Bridge, Colliers Wood
  • Roe Bridge
  • Mitcham Bridge
  • Ravensbury Bridge
  • Phipps Bridge
  • Maintenance of the Parish Roads
  • The Turnpikes
  • The era of the stagecoach

From the foreword: This booklet is not concerned with the Roman Roads (and how they were built and developed), but seeks rather to examine what we know about the roads and bridges in Mitcham whilst it was still a village, and in particular how the parish endeavoured to grapple with the problems of their maintenance until the close of the 19th century

The condition of the booklet is generally very good. The cover is clean and bright, the staple spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
