From the front inside fly leaf: The village of Pimperne lies in a chalk valley two miles north of Blandford Forum on the road to Salisbury. The roots of the village have been long-since forgotten, bur for centuries the daily round in Pimperne remained unchanged, determined by the rhythms of the seasons and the agriculrure which served as the lifeblood of the community. Over a single generation, however, this way of life was transformed with the intervention of modern machinery forcing the traditional working methods to be cast aside. The villagers have had to adapt to a new way of life and The Book of Pimperne celebrates their story, looking back over the years to those whose lives have touched today's generation; to the families and individuals who, through photographs and reminiscences, have given Pimperne a rich and vibrant history to treasure.
A community effort, the book is the result of many happy hours spent reminiscing and looking back through treasured collections of photographs. Jean Coull came to Pimperne 40 years ago with her husband and two small children, and was soon immersed in village life, becoming involved in the school, the Women's Institute, the Garden Club and the Parish Council. In her spare time she completed a degree in modern European history which led, in turn, to an interest in oral history and the idea for a village book. Jean has been welcomed into the homes of a great number of the villagers who have willingly shared both their memories and photographs with her.
