From the front inside fly leaf: Now a village, Lydford was historically an important town and borough, the boundaries once encompassing most of Dartmoor. The settlement is ancient, the church dating from AD650 and the castle from 1195, and for centuries tin and silver were mined and minted here. The castle was the seat both of the feared Stannary Courts and the prison to which its convicts (reputedly hanged first and tried later) were sent. Over time, however, Lydford declined, becoming an unattractive place to live and consequently remained almost untouched; even today the 'grid' pattern of the main street and intersecting green lanes can be clearly seen, as can the 'town banks' and the ancient fort above the deep ravine carved out by the River Lyd. One could say that Lydford is the 'jewel in the crown' of the Dartmoor National Park and it is no surprise that it is guarded so carefully.
