Before the church was built and the new parish of Colney Heath established in 1845 - as a deterrent to lawlessness - the wild, heathland area, named after the scrub on either side of a flooded river bank, had remained a remote part of Hertfordshire. So cut off was it that the place was regarded as the 'wilderness' of the well-to-do St Peter's parish centred on St Albans, four miles to the north-west. The old image of a daunting territory was gradually set aside and the progress of the village and of its pleasant surrounding settlements over 150 years has been remarkable.
