Southgate and Edmonton Street Names, by Graham Dalling
Published by the Edmonton Hundred Historical Society in 1990, 93 pages. A5 size booklet.
This booklet provides a fascinating directory of street names in Edmonton and Southgate (North London), as they existed in the early 1900's
Arranged in alphabetical order, the book contains over 500 streets, and details (where known) when the street was built, when the first houses were occupied, and any other interesting information on them!
So for instance, the entry for Highworth Road, N11, reads: The 1896 Ordinance Survey shows the road under construction with just one house constructed. It was then called Highfield Road. The name had been changed by 1901
Edmonton was an ancient hundred in the north of the county of Middlesex, England (A hundred was an old name for a small geographic area, perhaps referring to an area liable to provide a hundred men under arms, or containing roughly a hundred homesteads)
The hundred was listed in the Domesday Book in 1086, and contained the parishes and settlements of Edmonton, Enfield, Monken Hadley, South Mimms and Tottenham. Now of course the area has been swallowed up in the urban sprawl of London, and is spread over the London Borough's of Enfield, Haringey and Barnet
Condition of the booklet is generally good. The covers are clean and tidy, the spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. The booklet does have some bubbling throughout, and an old price printed on the front cover
