South Yorkshire Stingo - A Directory of South Yorkshire Brewers 1758-1995, by David Lloyd Parry
Published by the Brewery History Society in 1997, 122 pages. Large A4 size paperback (N3783)
This fascinating book lists nearly 100 brewers from South Yorkshire over the last two hundred and fifty years, and includes many of the Sheffield brewers. Many famous names appear here - Tennant, Barnsley, Ward, Stones, Hope & Anchor, Whitworth Son & Nephew, and as well as lots of details on the breweries themselves, the book also includes the details of pubs operated by the breweries, and the dates they aquired the properties.
The book is divided into sections according to area, and they include: Barnsley, Bentley, Brampton Bierlow, Consiborough, Darton, Doncaster, Elsecar, Hatfield, Mexborough, Penistone, Platts Common, Rotherham, Sheffield, Swinton, Thorne, Thurlstone Bank, Tinsley and Warth on Dearne
The book is illustrated throughout with lots of black and white photographs and drawings, including lots showing advertsiments and beer labels from the different breweries
(Out of interest - I think 'Stingo' from the title of the book was actually a strong type of ale that was popular in Yorkshire and the Midlands in the distant past)
Condition of the book is generally very good. The cover is clean and tidy, the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover
