From the introduction: The first edition of The Patriot (Carlisle and Cumberland Advertiser) appeared on 3June 1815, priced sixpence-halfpenny. Did Carlisle really need another newspaper - after all the Whig oriented Carlisle Journal had made its appearance in 1798. The founder of The Patriot, Isaac Milner, had (according to his daughter, Mary Milner) "long observed with sorrow, the increase and dissemination of a democratic spirit in the city and neighbourhood of Carlisle, courtesy of The Carlisle Journal and had thought very seriously on the subject with a view to adopting some practical means of checking the growing evil. As the best means of effecting this purpose he had conceived the design of establishing a weekly newspaper, to be conducted on loyal andconstitutional principles."

The condition of the book is generally very good. The plastic covers have some minor scuffs and wear, but the spiral binding is intact and all pages are cleam, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
