The author was born in Shilbottle, and his father’s family were natives of the village, which famously had ‘three halves’, the top, the middle, and the bottom. Those at the top rarely frequented the bottom, and the nearest the bottom folk got to the top was St. James Church, the fish shop and the Farriers Arms.
