The year 1814 saw the beginnings of a fire service in Hitchin, and in this book the author describes the development of the service, including a great number of incidents that Hitchin’s fire engines have attended. Drawing on original research from log books and contemporary newspaper reports, as well as conversations with many of his brigade colleagues, the author provides a fascinating account of the Hertfordshire service over many decades, and from the curious to the tragic, incidents that Hitchin’s firemen have been involved in are as varied as they are dramatic. All text in the book is printed on one side, in calligraphic text.

The condition of the book is generally very good. The cover has one or two very minor scuffs, but the spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
