One-Time Marine, A Bootneck's Tale, by Haydn Jenkins
Book published by the Royal Marines Historical Society in 2009, 70 pages. Slim paperback (N7340WSO)
From the rear side cover: This Special Publication presents a light-hearted reflection on life in the Corps for the ordinary Marine, rather than a compilation of historical facts. It covers a period in the decade following World War II, which will be recalled by many still alive today, including those National Servicemen (1945-63) who served their time with the Royal Marines.
Recounting episodes from his service in the Royal Marines just after World War II the author tells of his reasons for joining, then the training, service in the Middle and Far East, a parachute course (he was almost in a film with a famous American actor), the Coronation, 1953, and the evacuation of refugees from North Vietnam. Victim of a falling hammock, malarial fever and fear of parachute failure; with a 'glass' jaw he relates in amusing bootneck (Marine) style his own shortcomings but with total admiration for the Marines...
The condition of the book is generally very good. The cover has one or two minor scuffs, but the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
