Brand New Book
Colonel Neil Campbell, a Scotsman with a glorious military background, was chosen by the British to accompany Napoleon Bonaparte into exile on the island of Elba in 1814, and it was Campbell's job partly to guard the fallen emperor and partly to spy on him.
He became in time a confidant of Napoleon and was witness to the mini empire that the would-be master of Europe set up on his island. Campbell kept a meticulous diary for a year, chronicling the activities of Napoleon and revealing his character which could be both curt and charming.
Through this diary we see the many intrigues that surrounded the prisoner and how his plans for escape steadily progressed, and this book is a masterful insight into a neglected part of Napoleon's life story
