Memories of the Post-War AFS in Wiltshire 1948-1968, by Arthur W. Tovey
A4 size spiral bound booklet published privately by the author in 1992, 96 pages. (S7946WSOU3)

From the preface: Very few, if any, memories of the "second" Auxiliary Fire Service have been committed to paper. I have tried in this small volume to recall come of the incidents which occurred to me and other A.FS. personnel attached to a large West Country County Fire Brigade during the years between 1949 and 1968.

It is hoped that no offence will be caused (or is intended) if any reader thinks that they may recognise any situation recounted in this volume in which they may have been involved.

Of necessity, the memories are somewhat "parochial" in nature, but I believe that similar experiences and anecdotes could be duplicated across the country wherever the A.FS. were involved. Also included, in some detail, are descriptions and photographs of our uniforms and appliances. Some background history is also included.

Time blurs the memory, and in this respect I must ask indulgence in advance for any errors or omissions. I would also like to thank the many Fire Service and ex-Fire Service friends who jogged my memory and made valuable suggestions many times during the compilation of these reminiscences. Special thanks go also to the Chief Fire Officer of Wiltshire, Mr John Craig, for his encouragement and support.

My sincere thanks must also go to my wife (who was also afull-time Divisional Control Room Operator and A.FS. firewoman) for her patient endurance and proof-reading during the period when my typewriter was getting hot. My thanks also to owners of various photographs for their permission to reproduce them. It is hoped that this collection of reminiscences will evoke many happy memories in the minds of readers who had the honour of serving in the AFS.....
