This book is a fascinating pictorial history of the railways in and around Bolton, and includes over 40 black and white photographs (one to each page), showing the stations, tracks and locomotives of the railway many decades ago....

From the rear side cover: This is a view of the railways that served Bolton from 1828 and continue to do so in a reduced form. It portrays a time when motor cars were rare and most urban movement was either on the train or the tram, or later bus. Although Bolton was not on the main line there was always much to see. it formed a nucleous of intense local services with amazingly long goods trains passing by, well out of sight. It is a very personal recollection from a time when vapours of steam marked out the moving trains amongst the mills and factories that have all passed into history....
