Ludford Bridge and Mortimer's Cross, by Geoffrey Hodges
Published by Logaston Press in 2014, 72 pages. Paperback (N5023P1)
This book provides a fascinating history of the battles of Ludford Bridge and the battle of Mortimer's Cross during the Wars of the Roses, and is illustrated throughout with several black and white photographs, drawings and maps.
These two battles occured within a few miles of each other on the Welsh border in the central marches (although taking place two years apart), and together they marked the low point and subsequent return to fortune of the Yorkist cause. The first battle essentially ended Richard, Duke of York's effective leadership of the Yorkist cause, whilst the battle at Mortimer's Cross witnessed the first independent command of Edward, Earl of March, the soon to be Edward IV. Both battles are explained within the context of the time and the military campaign surrounding it, and the book is an essential read for anyone interested in this period of English history...
