From the rear side cover: One of four volumes exploring the tramway history of Wales. Cardiff's tramway system had its origins in the horse tramways of the late 19th century and the first electric tramcars appeared in 1902. For the next 25 years the tram was to dominate the local streets, but from the early 1930s the system gradually declined. Although World War 2 intervened to delay the final conversion, the introduction of the trolleybus in 1942 was another step towards the final elimination of the tram. The last trams operated in 1950 and little - other than photographs - now remains to remind people of the once dominant electric tram.
