Late Turn - Bradford and Trolleybuses 1960-1972, by Stan Ledgard

Published by Bobtail Press in 2006, 64 pages. A5 size booklet (N5202)

Stan Ledgard worked on the Trolleybuses in Bradford for many years (he was based at the Duckworth Lane depot), and in this fascinating booklet he collects together around 100 black and white photographs taken of vehicles working in the city (There are generally two photographs per page). All the photographs were taken between 1960 and 1972, and have captions describing what is seen. A few of the captions are given below to provide an idea of the sorts of photographs included in the booklet:

  • 792 speeds along Leeds Road, heading for the greengate terminus on the long clockwise loop

  • Mulcott Road. 783 stands on the loop on a City-Dudley Hill working, to allow 715 (which is following en route from depot to city) to pass

  • 787 lurches into Green End, Clayton, after negoatiating the three right angle turns through the village

From the introduction: Bradford was the first and last trolleybus operator in Britain. Much has been written about the history so repition is unnecessary... here is a selection of previously unpublished photographs, of the city centre which has mostly vanished and the of the suburbs where time has (almost) stood still.

The period is roughly the last ten years of trolleybus operation, during part of which period I worked on the trolleys, based at Duckworth Lane depot. This booklet is mostly concerned with routes operating from Thornbury depot.

Amongst the staff was a great sense of camaraderie... when I finally left the job it was with regret, and for many years afterwards I maintained contact with fellow crew members and shed staff.

Condition of the booklet is generally excellent. The covers are clean and bright, the staple spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover
