Land and Freedom, by Barry Winter
Booklet published by the Independent Labour Party (ILP), 18 pages. A5 size pamphlet (N4054P1)
From the first inside page: A veil obscures the Spanish Civil War. This pamphlet highlights the actions that many still prefer to forget. Can we be satisfied with simple nostalgia about the undoubted courage of the International Brigades? Or, as George Orwell implies in Homage to Catalonia, are there important lessons to be learned by looking a little closer at some of the events in the civil war?
This short pamphlet offers a brief analysis of the Spanish Civil War, and especially the politics and events that dominated the left during this period. It explores the background to the rebellion, Working Class power, the role of the Soviet Union in discouraging a popular revolution, the POUM (a working class movement denounced by the communists as Trotskyist and agents of fascism), and the events of May 1937.
Condition of the booklet is generally excellent. The cover is clean and tidy, the staple spine is intact, and all pages are clean ,intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
