From the rear side cover: This book reviews the development of the steam locomotive in 20th Century India across all the major gauges - broad, metre, 2' 6", and 2'. Indian locomotive design was heavily standardized by the railways, and the majority of standard designs are represented, along with notable non standard designs. During the period of British colonial rule, Indian steam locomotives were generally acquired from Great Britain. Following Independence, India became self-sufficient in building steam locomotives. Each locomotive is described and illustrated with photographs, most of which have not been published previously. HO scale diagrams of each class are provided for modellers.
