Ralph Verney was a British Army officer, and served in the Boer War and later in France on the western front during the First World War (where he was injured and subsequently declared unfit for future service). In 1916 he was appointed Military Secretary to the Viceroy of India, with responsibility for the work and social life of the Viceroy and his family. He had a staff of several thousand, and this book collects together personal correspondence from the period, and together the collection of family letters offer a fascinating insight into the social history of British rule in India at that time
