From the opening paragraph: Highwayman. The word conjures up a mixture of feelings, some hostile, some almost respectful. Safe in distance from the time in which he operated we can afford to look on his activities with a sense of romance. In reality none of us would wish to be the vic­tims of one of his attacks and yet even during the peak time of highway robbery some highwaymen were looked on as 'lovable rogues'. For some, public acclaim came only on the way to the scaffold when they were no longer a threat, but others undoubted­ly enjoyed an admired reputation whilst still free. Why was this? It is worth examining...
