From the inside front fly leaf: This book is about the contribution that the railway made to the Great War. Primarily it concerns British railway companies, or railways operated or utilised by Briton's overseas supporting the war effort. It also considers the part played by the railway of the Central Powers in the build up to conflict in Europe. Mainly though, it is a book about British railwaymen who died in the Great War. As part of the preparation for this book over 12,500 of the 20,000 who died have been researched and over 1,000 feature in this book. It is hoped that this gives some idea of the range, scope and scale of the effort that railway employees made in serving their country 100 years ago.
