George Orwell at Home, and among the Anarchists

Published by Freedom Press in 1998, 76 pages. Large softback. (N2886)

Brand New Book

This book includes three essays on the writer George Orwell, and are illustrated with lots of photographs of Orwell and son Richard, all taken in 1946, and showing the writer at home in the austere flat at 27b Canonbury Square, Islington, and walking in the local streets.

The photographs are all hauntingly personal, and show Orwell rolling a fag, drinking his tea, sitting at his typewriter, chiseling some wood in a vice in his workshop where tools hang from nails banged into the picture rail, holding Richard while fastening his shoes, and pushing him around in a rickety pushchair. The three essays in the book are:

  • Orwell the Humanist, by Vernon Richards (including a section on Orwell's time spent fighting in Spain during the Spanish Civil War)
  • Orwell and Anarchism, by Colin Ward
  • Orwell and Anarchism, by Nicolas Walter

The book has a small publishers price sticker on the rear side cover
