Fighting Privatisation: The Victory in Gloucester
Booklet published by NUPE & the IWC in 1984, 44 pages. A5 size booklet (N4950)
This booklet provides an account of the campaign waged by the local Labour and Trade Union movement in Gloucester in the early 1980's in opposing the extensive programme of privatisation that was being proposed. The booklet assesses their campaign of opposition to the proposed tendering, and the extent to which they were successfull.
From the conclusion: And so the battle was over and the Direct Labour Organisation had won. It had proved the truth of what the Trade Union movement within the Public Sector had consistently been saying, that no contractor can do public service work to the same high standards or as efficiently or cost effectively as a Direct Labour Force, because contractors are in the game for profits and do not have the same concern for the services....
Oh, how little has changed in the 30 years since. Now we are presented with a national Tory government that seeks to privatise huge chunks of the NHS. Maybe the lessons learnt in Gloucester in the early 1980's still have something to teach the Labour and Trade Union movement today.
Condition of the booklet is generally excellent. The covers are clean and tidy, the staple spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Their is an old price and small price sticker on the rear side cover
