Eighth Edition, published 1918. Loose 16 page booklet, together with cover boards (split). (S8295BWSO)

Margaret Sanger was an American writer, birth control activist, and sex educator, and she wrote this booklet on birth control titled 'family limitation', which caused considerable outrage at the time as it contained detailed and precise information and graphic descriptions of various contraceptive methods. In 1914 Margaret was prosecuted for violating obscenity laws, and in 1915 her then husband was sent to prison for a month for giving a copy of 'Family Limitation' to the staff member of Anthony Comstock (a politician who campaigned vigourously against materials he considered indecent, and which included information on Birth Control).

Margaret is widely regarded (and appluaded by many) as one of the founders of the modern Birth Control Movement, and the organisation she founded in 1921 (The American Birth Contol League) later became the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The condition of the item is very poor. The booklet comes in a decorated embossed board cover, which says 'Gift of Affection' on the front and back (Perhaps to make the booklet more 'discrete', and maybe given as a present to a newly married woman by her mother/relative? Hence a gift of affection?).  The Board cover is split in two along the middle, and is tatty and worn. The actual booklet itself is detached from the cover boards, and has been folded horizontally along the middle and has a deep crease running across it. The booklet has split and torn along this crease, and the split is worse on the first and last pages, where the tear runs almost all the way across the booklet.  There are also creases and wear along the edges and corners.
