Fallen in the Fight, Farnworth & Kearsley men who died in the Great War

This book provides a detailed list of soldiers from the Farnworth and Kearsley areas of Bolton who died during the First World War.

The first part of the book examines the role of the British army during the conflict, and goes on to examine the different theatres of war, battles and cmapaigns during the conflict (including France and Flanders, Italy, Gallipoli, Mesopotamia, Salonika, Egypt and Palestine, and East Africa), whilst the majority of the book is then taken up with a detailed list of the men of Farnworth and Kearsley who fought and died during the war. This list, arranged in a useful A to Z format depending upon the street where each man lived, includes lots of information on each soldier (where known), and a couple of entries are listed below to provide an idea of the sort of information that is included.

• Bent Street, Kearsley. Percy Chapman. Born Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Worked at Outwood Pits. Enlisted at Bury as a regular in 1st Border Regiment (5528). Served in Boer War, then went to India. In England february 1915; landed at Gallipoli 24/4/15. Wounded in the back by Shrapnel. Returned to his unit and was one of the last to leave at the evacuation 9/1/16. Died 11/8/16 at Netley Hospital from septic poisoning aged 38. Buried at Farnworth cemetry 3 days later; a firing party from Bury Barracks attended the funeral. memorial in cemetry.
• Hill Street, moses gate. L/Cpl James Robert Morris. Born Farnworth, attended All Saints Church. Joined Lancashire Fusiliers in 1911. A reservist. Worked in blasting shop of Richardson Tuer's foundry. A good boxer. Mobilised 8/8/14 - enlisted Bury (3591 2nd LFs). France and wounded in May 1915. Gassed in second Battle of Ypres, 8 weeks in hospital and then back on duty. KIA 17/2/16, aged 22 (Holding trenches at Serre - much German shelling)

The booklet is illustrated throughout with lots of black and white photographs and maps

Condition of the booklet is generally very good. The covers have one or two very minor scuffs, and some light wear along the edges and corners, but the staple spine is intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is an old price printed on the front cover and a small price sticker on the rear side
