Exter News Photographs - The 1940s, by Todd Gray
Published by the Mint Press in 2007, 217 pages. Rectangular paperback - c.21.5cm by 27.5cm (N5958X1)
This book is a fascinating collection of around 260 photographs showing the Devon city of Exeter in the 1940's - many of which have not seen since they appeared in the newspapers during the war years.
Taken from two of Devon's newspapers (the Western Morning News and the Express and Echo), each of the photographs has a caption explaining the scene, and a wide range of topics is covered - particularly war work, womens role in the war effort, home guard, evacuees especially from Bristol, shocking bomb damage, Polish and American servicemen, fund raising and parades.
The book will thus be of interest not only to those who lived in Exter during those years, but also people with a more general interest in the social and wartime history of the city...
Condition of the book is generally very good. The covers are clean and tidy, the spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. Please note the left and right hand edges of the book curve gently upwards from where it has been stored flat on the shelves, and there is a small price sticker on the rear side cover
