Discovering the Past 2 - West Barnes and Cannon Hill, by Peter Hopkins

Booklet published privately by the author in 2000, 32 pages in total (numbered on one side only). A4 size booklet (N6121)

This booklet provides a fascinating history of West Barnes and Cannon Hill in South-West London, and is illustrated throughout with lots of drawings, maps and photographs. Although A4 in size, the text spreads over double-spread pages, and provides a brief account of various sites and places of the local area, charting their history over past years, decades and centuries.

This large-format booklet devotes each of its 15 double-spread pages to a separate theme. After useful discussions of four key periods in the early history of the district, and an explanation of Merton Priory's estates at the Dissolution, there are lucid histories of each farm or other piece of land that together made up the western part of Merton parish and the immediately surrounding area. For each there is at least one map, the outline of each land-holding being superimposed on a modern map. The narrative is clear, and throughout there are nicely varied illustrations.

The condition of the booklet is generally good. The covers have one or two minor scuffs and creases, and a scratch running across the front, but the staple spine is intact and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There is a small price sticker on the rear side cover.

Please note that this booklet was printed privately, and so lacks the 'finish' of more professional publications. But this in no way detracts from its fascinating contents!
