Cumbria Stage Buses in Wasdale, Eskdale and Millom, by Stuart Emmett

The lengthy title hopefully says it all, but a map is included for those not familiar with this part of Cumbria. We take a trip down the Cumbrian coast from Whitehaven via Gosforth to Millom, with a short trip into Wasdale along the way. These routes were operated by Cumberland Motor Services and the book also looks at Sim’s former stage bus operation from Boot in Eskdale. This whole area had been seen as a safe place during the war so had thousands of evacuees, as well as ordnance factories, air stations and an armaments depot. The workers needed buses, so post-war there was a legacy of vehicles in reasonable condition. The book takes up the story from then until CMS was absorbed by Stagecoach in 1991.
