Book published by United Norwest Co-operatives in 2000. 80 pages. Large A4 size paperback (S7963YWSO)

From the introduction: There was a general feeling that with the spread of housing estates linking once separate communities and the much greater mobility of the modern age which enables people to travel longer distances for work, shopping, entertainment and holidays, such small places were in danger of losing both identity and community spirit. We thought this particularly applied to Butt Lane; strangers asking for the industrial estate in West Avenue can be directed to Kidsgrove, Talke, Butt Lane or even Linley. As class member Jack Poole stoutly contended "At the beginning of the 1900s the village was overshadowed by the town of Kidsgrove on one side and the parish of Talke, of which Butt Lane was and still is a part, on the other. Over the last Century Butt Lane has become a most important part of what was the old Kidsgrove and District Urban Council, particularly as it boasts the Nelson Industrial Estate, home to some of the most technologically advanced companies in the country."

This booklet has its origins in a series of local history classes run by Newcastle College at the WRVS Centre in Butt Lane in 1998. A small but enthusiastic group of students backed their tutor, Philip Leese, into a comer and insisted that the scope of the course be narrowed from the Kidsgrove and Talke areas in general to the village of Butt Lane and that, together, we should try to find out and record as much as we could about life in Butt Lane over the last Century.

The few mentions of Butt Lane in print are generally dismissive.....

The condition of the book is generally good. The cover has one or two minor scuffs, and some very light spine roll along the left hand edge, but the spine itself is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
