From the rear side cover: As the title suggests, this book tells the story of engine No. 45596 Bahamas. But it does more than that. It tells stories of people: those employed by, and those with enthusiasm for, the steam-powered railway. It even considers the fuel used to power these locomotives and its effect on the environment that helped bring about their demise 60 years ago; still a topic of discussion today.
These stories are set against the life and times in which Bahamas operated for the LMS and later British Railways, from the depression of the 1930s through to the swinging sixties. It delves into some of the technical issues and modifications that gave Bahamas its characteristic feature, the double chimney it received in 1961.
The book is also an account of those who wished to save steam beyond its economic and social viability, and the railway management who did not! The narrative continues with the creation and demise of Bahamas' first home in Derbyshire and the subsequent endeavour to ensure it has a future in Yorkshire.
The Bahamas Locomotive Society, through its Engine Shed museum at Ingrow on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, has an obligation to find ways of explaining these stories. This book is offered as one method...
