From the foreword by M.E. Burkett: Although Abbot hall was only opened as an Art Gallery in 1962 the collection has grown rapidly. Many fine pictures have been generously given, purchases have been made with the aid of the National Art-Collections Fund, the Victoria and Albert Museum grant-in-aid fund and the Gulbenkian award scheme, and several paintings have been put on long loan to the Gallery. Fortunately, however, because of the fairly youthful nature of the collection, there is opportunity for most of the paintings to be hung at frequent intervals.

We have been anxious to have an illustrated catalogue for some years, but thanks to the Job Creation Programme, we are at last able to begin by publishing "Pa.intings, Drawings and Water colours, and Sculpture". It has enabled us to publish photographs of the major works in the collection. We hope to add to this publication with similar productions encompassing the furniture and other decorative arts, as time goes by.

As much detail has been included as seems helpful to the average reader, and of course more information can be provided where available, on request. A great deal of work has gone into the preparation of the catalogue entries over the years by the staff. A generous grant from the Frieda Scott Charitable Trust has made the publication possible

The condition of the book is generally good. The covers have several scuffs and blemishes, and light wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is intact and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
