A Short History of the Royal Marines, edited by B.L. Carter

Book published by the Royal Marines Historical Society. 192 pages. Paperback (N4946P1)

From the rear side cover: This book has been updated to include the most recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Libya and maritime counter piracy operations in the Indian Ocean. Follow the story of this illustrious Corps from its origins in 1664, through to the 21st century. Marines had over 2,800 afloat at Trafalgar, won VC's in the Crimea, provided the British garrison during the Boxer rebellion, fought in the Maori wars, the China wars, and in Africa against the Zulus and the Boers. There were more than 3,700 marines at the Battle of Jutland, they fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. And during the Second World War over 74,000 Royal Marines fought at sea and in Commando actions. They manned landing craft, provided frogmen, drove tanks and flew with the Fleet Air Arm.

In the past 60 years the Corps has been involved in peace keeping and colonial wars from Malaya to Korea, from Aden to Borneo, to the Falklands, and more recently in Kosovo, Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.

This history traces the development from soldiers who served at sea to the modern day Commando force, providing manpower for amphibious operations, a large part of Special Forces, and a quick reaction force anywhere in the world. It also has a wide range of appendices covering everything from Colours, traditions, memorable dates, music and a comprehensive chronology. Illustrated throughout with lots of small colour and black and white photographs, chapters include:

  • The early Marine Regiments 1664-1755
  • Three Grand Divisions 1755-1827
  • The Crimea, Boers and Boxers 1827-1902
