Booklet published by Neil Richardson in 1987, 38 pages. A4 size booklet (N5367)

From the introduction: Today, Stockport has just one brewery - a century ago the town boasted half a dozen sizeable brewing companies and a dozen smaller breweries. Earlier still, well over one hundred licensed houses in and around Stockport sold beer brewed in their own brewhouses.

This book is divided into three main sections: Part 1: The Major Breweries - Stockport's "Big Six". Part 2: Small Breweries. Apart
from a few early businesses and one recent short-lived venture, these were usually concerns which developed from a public house and brew house to control and supply beer to other licensed houses. Part 3:"Home Brewed Ales". This· section lists public houses and beerhouses which are known to have brewed their own beer. It is not comprehensive - the early nineteenth century saw many brew houses in use before competition from the emerging brewery companies made all but a few uneconomic. A fourth section, "Odds and Ends", lists some of the shopkeeper brewers, little-known beerhouse brewers and brewers whose names appear only in early records.
