A Backwards Glance - Events in Aylsham's Past
Published by the Aylsham Local History Society, 36 pages. A4 size booklet (N6307CHX1)
Aylsham is a small market town situated on the banks of the River Bure in north Norfolk, and this booklet contains a fascinating collection of articles, observations and stories about the history of the place and it's people. The booklet is illustrated throughout with several drawings and maps.
From the introduction: I was asked to write an introduction for this modest collection of papers... which record some part of the work which members of the Local History Society have undertaken during the past ten years. They cover in particular the work we have more recently undertaken in our examination of the local archives which are held in the Town Hall and what we have felt interesting enough to recover from the deluge of time. In this booklet.... is a collection of articles summarising the exhibits [from a local history exhibition organised and held by the society in July 1994], so that the information which we had put together in photographs, drawings and written panels is recorded in more permanent form. Sections include:
- A Time Chart
- Poor Relief in Aylsham 1700-1836
- Hungate Street
- The Bure Navigation 1779-1912
- Aylsham at Prayer
- The Norwich to Cromer Turnpike Road
- The Norwich to Cromer Tramway
- The Railway Memorabilia
- Queen Victoria's Jubilee Celebrations
- The Aylsham Regatta and Rowing Club
- Flooding at Mash's Row 1993
- Oral History
