Published by the Bridgtown and District Local History Society in 2013, 64 pages. Booklet - c.16cm by 24cm (N5509)

This booklet is a fascinating recent history of Bridgtown in Staffordshire, and explores the lives and stories of people who have lived in the local area in recent times. It will thus delight anyone who has lived or grown up in Bridgtown, as well as people with a more general interest in the history of this part of Cannock Chase in times gone by....

From the rear side cover: In this book the intention is to widen the scope beyond the artificially-created formal boundaries of Bridgtown, but the concentration remains on the "ordinary" people of the area in the days when residents talked to each other a lot and helped out their neighbours in their hour of need. There was a real spirit of togetherness which pervaded the tough and
difficult lives that many people led. The book looks at the communities in and around the village. It has photographs and stories of times gone by. Bridgtown is now a growing community once again but the spirit and fortitude of past generations should be remembered for ever.

From the introduction: Bridgtown got its name because it was impossible to enter or exit the village without crossing over or under a bridge. Some of the bridges were not always visible but they were there, even if only in the form of a culvert under a main road. However, the communities just outside the official boundaries were still counted as "belonging" to the village, and so they should. Bridgtown was a wonderful place to live because of the strength and character of its people. People did value the friendship and support they got from their neighbours. People trusted one another and were repaid a thousand times over by the support around them.

This book looks at the Bridgtown area and particularly the people who lived there. It relates stories and memories of people in past times. There are many more people and families whose stories could have been told if only more information about them had come to light...
